No. 11 Texas Tech softball’s transfer-heavy team, which will face No. 1 Alabama in the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series on Monday night, has been embroiled in controversy throughout this year’s NCAA Softball event.

A year after the school’s NIL collective spent $1 million for superstar ace NiJaree Canady (who agreed to another seven-figure contract following the 2025 season) and lost to Texas in the WCWS finals, the Red Raiders have replenished with even more transfer talent. Before the 2026 season, the team signed seven new players from the portal; 15 of the 23 players on the current squad did not start their careers in Lubbock.

The controversy surrounding Texas Tech’s new transfer class began a year ago, when the school was charged of using third parties to recruit players from other rosters, but has escalated this postseason. Mia Williams, a Florida transfer, and Taylor Pannell, a Tennessee transfer, both made news for arguments with their prior clubs.

“We’re doing things that maybe have never been done before,” Texas Tech head coach Gerry Glasco stated before the World Series. Glasco came to Lubbock in 2025 and helped the Red Raiders make their first WCWS appearance. “I am enjoying every minute, and if softball wants me to be the antagonist, I am all for it. “

‘She Said I Made a Mistake

Tennessee’s walk-off victory over Texas Tech on Saturday advanced the Volunteers to the semifinals and the Red Raiders to the elimination bracket. Pannell, the Red Raider third baseman, stated that her former coach, Tennessee’s Karen Weekly, had words for her in the handshake line after the game.

“She told me I made a mistake rather of saying ‘good game,'” Pannell, who spent three seasons in Tennessee, remarked of Weekly. “It’s kind of absurd… I simply find it amusing that she is still contemplating it, but it is no longer news.

Weekly claimed in her press conference that she simply told Pannell “good game,” which she did to everyone else. She later termed Pannell’s charges “an outright fabrication. ” On Sunday, ESPN aired close-up footage of the exchange, with analyst Beth Mowins corroborating Weekly’s assertion.

Mowins, however, pointed out that Glasco questioned Pannell, “Did someone say anything? ” and Pannell answered. ESPN refused to make any additional statements on the situation to FOS.

According to screenshots from Softball On SI, Pannell’s father, Brandon, sent several X posts regarding the claimed handshake line event. “My child did make a mistake, and that was to play for her… ” he said.

Last year, Pannell entered the transfer portal and pledged to Texas Tech soon after Tennessee was eliminated from the WCWS. Weekly told The Athletic that there was “no question” that the Red Raiders were recruiting “our player” while she was still with Tennessee, and that Pannell informed her she signed a “financial agreement” with them prior to joining the portal.

Increased Handshake Scrutiny

Mia Williams, the team’s second baseman, had a disagreement with her own a week before Pannell became involved in one. Williams’ issue happened in Gainesville, where Texas Tech faced Florida in the NCAA Super Regionals from May 22-24.

Williams, who played her first two seasons in Florida, was struck by a pitch five times during the three-game Supers series. Her teammates came out of the dugout after the fifth hit in Game 3, and Glasco ordered them to return inside. Florida did not shake hands with Texas Tech players after the game, who had formed a handshake line.

In her postgame interview, Canady remarked on the handshake disregard, as well as Williams’ hit-by-pitch at-bats. Florida head coach Tim Walton, who was ejected from the game for arguing over umpire rulings, claimed he had “no idea” what caused the fight between the two teams’ players.

“I don’t think that’s fair to the children in both dugouts,” Walton said. “I have no idea where that pot was stirred. There has never been a problem. Kids switch all the time.

Williams’ father, former Gator and NBA player Jason Williams, claims Walton purposefully avoided shaking his daughter’s hand by getting sent out. Williams said he would only visit Florida’s campus if his daughter played softball there again.

Texas Tech will face Alabama in a semifinal elimination game at 7 p. m. Monday on ESPN. If it defeats the Crimson Tide, it will play a second, if necessary, game against them to determine who will play in the finals against the winner of the Texas-Tennessee semifinals.
