Joey McGuire’s 2026 recruiting class was the highest-ranked high school class in modern college football history (since 2000). The Red Raiders placed 18th in the country, with their previous greatest class being 19th in 2011 under Tommy Tuberville. But the defending Big 12 champions want to help this program reach even greater heights with the 2027 recruiting class.

Julian Caldwell, a four-star wide receiver, committed to Texas Tech on Friday. He is the ninth player to commit to the Red Raiders in the 2027 class. Another Red Raider prospect has set his commitment date for May 15. Texas Tech is now one of six schools with several five-star pledges in the 2027 class. What is the highest position this class can achieve? Here’s the state of affairs in early May.

Highest-ranked signee in program history.

Blue-chip recruits are flocking to West Texas in remarkable numbers. This Red Raider 2027 recruiting class is led by On3 and Rivals’ number one overall-ranked player, defensive lineman Jalen Brewster. The 6′-3” 300-pounder from Cedar Hill, Texas, is described as a “dangerous pass rusher from any position” who “has legitimate game-wrecking moments on tape,” according to On3’s scouting report. The school’s previous highest-rated high school recruit was wide receiver Micah Hudson. Brewster would become the highest-rated recruit to ever sign a commitment to the Red Raiders after graduating from high school.

Every top Texas recruit passes through Lubbock.

As of this writing, seven of the state’s 21 highest-rated prospects have verbally pledged to Texas Tech. That squad includes a top-five quarterback in Kavian Bryant, two top-15 wide receivers, a top-ten linebacker, a top-ten running back to join the best running back room in the country, and two game-wrecking defensive linemen. The Red Raiders are now ranked No. 2 nationally for their current 2027 recruiting class. The next-closest team in the Big 12 is Baylor, which is ranked 35th in the country. Texas Tech’s position as the Big 12’s new flag-bearer program continues to solidify.
