The Minnesota Vikings received a major boost ahead of their crucial Week 9 NFC North matchup against the Detroit Lions, as several key players returned to practice — headlined by rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was a full participant for the first time since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 2.

McCarthy’s return comes at a pivotal moment for Minnesota, which has struggled to find consistency on offense in his absence. Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that McCarthy took all first-team reps during Wednesday’s practice and looked sharp in both dropbacks and mobility drills. “He’s handled his recovery like a pro,” O’Connell said. “We’re excited to see him back out there competing.”

Along with McCarthy, the Vikings also welcomed back several defensive contributors. Linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (neck) and edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (shoulder) were full participants after being limited in recent weeks. Their availability will be critical against Detroit’s physical offensive line, anchored by Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker.

On the offensive front, left tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) was upgraded to full participation, solidifying the protection unit in front of McCarthy. Right tackle Brian O’Neill (ankle) was limited but is trending in the right direction, according to O’Connell. Running back Ty Chandler (hamstring) and cornerback Akayleb Evans (shoulder) also practiced in limited fashion.

The Vikings remain cautious with a few rotational players. Safety Lewis Cine and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers were both limited due to minor ailments but are expected to be available for Sunday’s divisional battle.

Defensively, Minnesota’s focus will be on slowing down Jahmyr Gibbs and containing quarterback Jared Goff, while the offensive line’s ability to neutralize Aidan Hutchinson — McCarthy’s former Michigan teammate — will be one of the key storylines to watch.

With McCarthy back under center, the Vikings hope to inject life into an offense that hasn’t topped 22 points in its last four games. The chemistry between McCarthy and star wideout Justin Jefferson could be the X-factor as Minnesota aims to close the gap in the NFC North race.

The Vikings and Lions square off Sunday at Ford Field, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET.
