Ipswich Town are reportedly edging closer to completing the signing of Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu in what could become one of the club’s biggest transfers of the summer.
According to Sky Sports, the Blues are close to reaching an agreement with Leicester City on a deal worth around £20 million for the highly-rated Ghana international. Negotiations between the two Championship clubs have intensified after Ipswich’s opening offer was rejected, with both sides now believed to be closing in on a final agreement.
Ipswich’s interest in the 22-year-old first emerged last week, and talks have progressed steadily despite Leicester initially turning down the club’s first bid. The Tractor Boys remain determined to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Recent reports had linked Fatawu with a move to Everton, claiming the winger had agreed personal terms with the Merseyside club. However, the latest developments suggest Ipswich Town are now leading the race for his signature. West Ham United and Turkish side Besiktas have also been credited with interest, but Portman Road appears to be the player’s most likely destination.
Fatawu joined Leicester City from Sporting CP in 2023 on an initial loan deal, which became permanent after the Foxes secured promotion to the Premier League. He remained with Leicester following their relegation and enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in the Championship.
One of his standout moments came against Ipswich Town at the King Power Stadium in December, when he scored a spectacular goal from inside his own half. Despite his individual performances, Leicester endured a disappointing season and suffered relegation.
Ipswich continue to be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market. The Blues are also close to completing the signing of FC Volendam goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen, while discussions remain ongoing over a move for Union SG goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
In midfield, Ipswich are in talks with experienced Japan international Hidemasa Morita, who is currently available as a free agent after leaving Sporting CP.
If the deal for Abdul Fatawu is completed, it would represent another major statement of intent from Kieran McKenna’s side as they continue strengthening their squad for the challenges of the upcoming Premier League season.
