The Tennessee Volunteers are relying on experience and stability to build their defensive identity, appointing Earl Grant as their new defensive coordinator.
Grant comes in Knoxville with a long career that includes 12 seasons as a head coach, seven at the College of Charleston and five at Boston College. Grant is well-known for his focus on structure and physicality, and he has continuously built disciplined defensive teams.
During his time as a head coach, three of Grant’s teams were among the top 100 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. His most remarkable defensive season was in 2016, when his Charleston club placed 20th in the country.
Grant’s teams have dominated in one of the most important yet neglected aspects: defensive rebounding. In all 12 seasons as a head coach, his clubs were among the top 100 nationally in defensive rebounding percentage. That degree of consistency reflects a culture based on hard effort, positioning, and restricting second-chance opportunities.
Grant now inherits a Tennessee defense that has had its peaks and valleys. The Volunteers finished 14th in defensive efficiency under former coordinator Justin Gainey. While the record remains outstanding, it comes after several seasons in which Tennessee’s defense was one of the finest in the country.
Grant’s task will be to preserve Tennessee’s defensive strength while assisting in the improvement of a squad packed with offensive potential. With numerous of the nation’s finest scorers in the fold, the Vols have the chance to develop into a more balanced squad capable of dominating both ends of the court.
