The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team has had a tough offseason, losing its two top scorers from last season in Nick Boyd and John Blackwell, as well as a few more reserve players. However, many Badgers decided to stay devoted, remaining in Madison, most notably forward Nolan Winter. Despite receiving chances elsewhere that would have undoubtedly filled his wallet more than Wisconsin could provide, Winter chose to stay at home and finish his college career where it began.
Winter explained his choice in a recent interview, outlining the reasons for remaining. “I want to be a Badger,” Winter told us, “do everything you can to ensure that it happens. ” From the start, he made it clear to those around him that his first objective was to remain in Wisconsin, which he did.
However, remaining still was not his sole alternative. Especially in today’s college basketball scene, the big guy role is more profitable and desired than ever before, making players such as Winter highly marketable.
“It’s difficult to ignore what other teams have to say and offer,” Winter remarked. “But, as I’ve said, I’m grateful that my agents made this process so simple for me and presented all of my possibilities, so I told them this is where I want to be. “
To put it simply, Winter appreciates the opportunity he has been granted in Madison and believes that there is no better place for him to be than where he is. The 7-foot center has enjoyed sustained growth in output and role throughout his time in Wisconsin, with a significant jump from his sophomore to junior seasons.
Greg Gard, the Badgers’ head coach, and the rest of the team’s coaches and players will urge Winter to take the plunge once again as they approach their final season together. Whether he will be able to do so and guide this squad to the destinations they desire is a topic for another day. For the time being, Wisconsin and basketball fans should applaud the dedication of one of the sport’s top big men.
