Packers Miss Out on Top Coach to Rival
The Green Bay Packers are on the hunt for a new defensive line coach following their decision to part ways with Jason Rebrovich.
Green Bay quickly started their search by interviewing Eric Washington (former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator), Aaron Whitecotton (New York Jets defensive line coach), and Kacy Rodgers (Tampa Bay Buccaneers run game coordinator and defensive line coach).
However, the Packers will need to adjust their list as Rodgers won’t be coming to Green Bay.
Packers News: Kacy Rodgers Joins Detroit Lions’ Staff
On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Rodgers is expected to take on the role of defensive line coach with the Detroit Lions. Fowler also noted that Rodgers is replacing Terrell Williams, who moved to the New England Patriots as their defensive coordinator.
Rodgers would have been a strong addition to the Packers’ coaching staff, given his success with Tampa Bay’s defense in recent years. This season, the Buccaneers boasted one of the best run defenses in the NFL, allowing just 97.8 yards per game (fourth-lowest).
In addition, the Buccaneers ranked seventh in sacks (46), which was one more than the Packers (45 – 10th in the NFL). Rodgers had been with Tampa Bay for six seasons, serving as both the defensive line coach and, for three years, the run-game coordinator.
The Packers currently have Anthony Campanile, who also serves as the linebackers coach, as their run-game coordinator.
Detroit wasted no time in filling this role, marking a minor setback for Green Bay. However, the Packers still have Washington and Whitecotton as viable defensive line coach candidates.
Green Bay needs to act quickly, as some head coaching jobs remain open, meaning staffs will be assembled for those teams, potentially reducing the available options for the Packers’ search.
