NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday evening that the Jets have brought in Detroit Lions tight ends coach Steve Heiden to serve as their offensive line coach. This move follows the news that the team would not be retaining holdover OL coach Keith Carter.
Heiden’s appointment is both intriguing and unexpected, given the role he will be filling. A former NFL tight end, he has primarily worked as a tight ends coach throughout his career.
However, his past connection with Glenn in Detroit makes him a logical choice, even if his specific job title is surprising. Heiden will be one of the most significant coaching hires for the Jets this offseason.
Who Is NY Jets OL Coach Steve Heiden?
Heiden played over a decade in the NFL as a tight end for the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns before retiring due to injuries in 2011. He transitioned into coaching in 2013 when he joined the Arizona Cardinals staff as an assistant.
The South Dakota State alum began as an assistant special teams and tight ends coach and remained with the Cardinals for a decade before departing for the Lions in 2023.
Heiden’s only prior offensive line coaching experience came in 2018 when the Cardinals briefly made him their assistant OL coach. He returned to his usual tight ends coaching role the following year.
Despite his limited experience with the offensive line, Heiden’s coaching background is strong. With over a decade as an NFL assistant and a career as a former player, he offers valuable insight and leadership.
Heiden also played a role in developing Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, who set a rookie record for catches in 2023 and earned second-team All-Pro honors.
The Lions have consistently fielded one of the league’s top offensive lines, so if Heiden contributed to their success, it’s an encouraging sign for his role with the Jets.
Although Glenn’s decision is unconventional due to Heiden’s lack of offensive line coaching experience, his overall credentials are solid. As long as he maintains a good rapport with players, he should be an improvement over Keith Carter.
