The Phoenix Suns retaliated in Game 4, led by their top scorers, and kept the game close until late in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma City responded every time. The Oklahoma City Thunder ended their first-round series with a performance that clearly showed where this squad belongs.
OKC won 131-122 to complete the sweep.
The celebration was well-deserved after the final whistle. But Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had something to say before the night ended.
SGA’s message for Dillon Brooks
The villain tale has followed Dillon Brooks throughout most of his NBA career.
It is part of his brand, value, and something he has embraced at stops in Memphis, Houston, and now Phoenix. Brooks plays with an aggressiveness that opponents notice and teammates praise. Most people outside a locker room perceive the provocation. The participants inside see something different.
SGA has a different perspective.
Following the sweep, Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his admiration for Brooks with the kind of bluntness that only genuine appreciation can bring.
“A great guy regardless of what others say about him, he’s a really good guy once you get to know him. All of the bad stuff doesn’t bother me. I am aware of Dillon’s true identity. He had a terrific series. Gilgeous-Alexander remarked, “I am proud of him for constantly improving. “
That is one contender recognizing another after a week of real basketball.
What Brooks Contributed to This Series?
The figures substantiated the acclaim.
Brooks was one of the few Suns who consistently made the Thunder perform. In Game 4 alone, he scored 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including a steal, a block, three assists, four rebounds, and two 3-pointers. He was a challenge on both ends of a game that Oklahoma City won by nine.
Throughout the series, Brooks represented what SGA preached. He provided the Phoenix with the advantage they needed against a Thunder club that does not become upset easily. The Suns were swept, but Brooks was not to blame. He gave everything the part needed.
Booker scored 24 points to lead Phoenix in scoring, but the Suns failed to create enough around their stars to shake Oklahoma City’s composure late in the game.
Final Word for the Suns
SGA did not have to express his views on Brooks. The sweep has been completed. The series had come to an end. He stated it anyhow.
That is what genuine respect looks like. It was not a planned media moment. Just one person telling the truth about another following a series of tough questions for both of them.
Brooks responded. The title of villain did not define him here. Yes, it worked.
SGA took note.
